WELCOME TO MT RICHMOND SPECIAL SCHOOL
The Staff, Board of Trustees and students offer you an opportunity to learn about our school and all the educational opportunities we provide for children and young people with special educational needs.
Mt Richmond Special School is located in Otahuhu at the northern end of it's catchment area which covers the South Auckland suburbs of Otahuhu, Mt Wellington, Papatoetoe, East Tamaki, Otara, Mangere East and Manurewa. We also consider enrolments from nearby areas if there are special reasons.
Mt Richmond is a State school which caters for students from the age of 5 to 21 years across a wide range of disabilities including, intellectual, social-emotional, physical and sensory. Our pimary function is to meet the special needs of students with intellectual disabilities , but from time to time we will consider enrolments for students such as those with Aspergers Syndrome, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and those who may benefit for a variety of reasons from placement in the sheltered and nurturing environment that we have to offer.These cases are considered individually and are dependant on resources within the school available at the time.
We provide a holistic wrap-around service to our students,which is within the New Zealand Curriculum and is based on a functional approach. Each student has an Individual Educational Programme developed in consultation with parents/caregivers, specialists and therapists which aims to cover all aspects of each student's special needs. We provide opportunities for integration through our 13 satellite classes based in local schools at all levels from Primary to Secondary. Students are supported in small classes with teacher/student ratios of 1:5 to 1:10
with teacher aides, and a variety of specialist personnel.
