Editing Content

In this section:

Edit page

Almost all content created on a KiwiSchools website will be edited in the same way. Clicking a 'create' link on the User menu or clicking an edit tab on already created content will take you to an edit page like the one below.

All content should have a title and a body and depending on the content type, these fields may be called something else or there could be additional fields. See the content types page for further explanation.

Explanation

Title

The title will always be shown, regardless of how the content is displayed. The title should be descriptive and concise to help visitors find the content they want quickly.

Body

This is where your actual content will be. Body content may or may not be shown depending on how the content is displayed. For example, blogs only show the first few words when displayed in the sidebar, only a few lines when displayed on a profile page but show in full when the blog entry is being displayed by itself.

The formatting toolbar is explained below

Other Fields

Depending on the content type there may be other optional or required fields.

File Attachments

Most content types have an optional file upload field. Uploading attachments should be quite easy. Find a file to upload using your browsers upload button then click 'Attach' to attach it to the document. File type and size limits may apply.

Publishing Options

Site Admin users are allowed to change the publishing settings of the content. Only the 'Published' setting is currently used. By default, all content is published. You can hide content from everyone except admin users by unchecking 'Published' and saving the content. In this way you can keep the content as a draft until it is ready to publish or remove content without actually deleting it.

Save, Preview, Delete

The save button will immediately save all changes to the content and if it cannot, will explain what is wrong. The preview button will show what the current content will look like without actually saving it. This can be useful for checking difficult formatting. The delete button will delete the current content and page after asking for confirmation. Deleting cannot be undone. If you are unsure, unpublish the content instead of deleting it.

Formatting toolbar

The basic toolbar is what most users will see.

From left to right: Format selection, Bold, Italic, Ordered list, Unordered list, Hyperlink, Un-hyperlink, Image, Paste text, Paste from word.

Format selection – Selecting a format from the drop down menu will format the selected text or paragraph that the cursor is on in the selected style. When writing long passages, formatting appropriate headings makes it much easier to read.

Bold/Italic – Toggles selected text as bold or italic.

Ordered/Unordered List – Toggles selected text as a numbered list or bullet points.

Hyperlink – Creates or edits hyperlink on selected text. The most useful link types to choose from are URL (a link to a website) and Email (opens email program on visitors computer).

Unlink – Removes any hyperlink on selected text.

Image – Inserts or edits image where current cursor is. [see below for further explanation]

Paste as plain text – Gives a plain textbox to paste text into. This can be used to avoid strange pasted formatting or to paste text if your browser doesn't allow it directly.

Paste from word – Gives a text box to paste formatted text from Microsoft Word. Formatting will not copy across perfectly.

Uploading Images

See this tutorial video for a quick demonstration of how to upload an image.

The 'Image Properties' box gives us a field to enter the URL of an image if we know it or the option to browse the server to find or upload a file. In most cases you will want the image to be stored locally on the server.

Clicking the 'Browse Server' button will bring up a new window to browse the server. (If the Browse Server button is not visible, make sure the cursor has been placed somewhere within the edit content box before clicking on Insert Image.)

To upload an image to the server, click the upload button in the top left corner. You will be prompted to select a file from your computer to upload. Once it has uploaded it will appear in the right hand panel along with any other pictures you have uploaded.

To insert a file, double-click it or select it and click 'Insert File'. Click OK in the Image Properties window and the image will be inserted into your content.

Embedding a Video clip

This video tutorial will walk you through. Note: You need to upload the video FIRST - we recommend www.vimeo.com (free account available) rather than YouTube.
