Learning in the Cloud

NZ schools are rapidly adopting “cloud-based” solutions for students and teachers, the best known being Google Apps for Education.

It's completely free from Google and gives every student and every teacher (and non-teacher) an online account with their own school-based email address, GMail, Google Docs and Calendar. Dozens of other modules can be added later - still all free.

There are huge advantages in adding "learning in the cloud" to your school:

  • It's a superb way to collaborate - whether by a group of teachers, a small group of students, or an entire class. Teachers can share with colleagues, while students can share with one another and their classroom teacher.

  • It's 100% browser-based, so totally compatible with desktops, laptops, tablets, iPads and mobile devices e.g. smartphone

  • It's relatively easy to learn the basics and add-on modules offer plenty of expansion options. Many of you already use webmail, so you're half way there!

  • Medium-long term, there are real savings in your school's ICT infrastructure cost, especially for file servers.
